What extent does media violence leads towards aggression

The topic I have chosen is to discuss is how media violence plays in aggression in young adults and children. Albert Bandura developed the social learning theory. Bandura did a bobo doll experiment in 1961 and 1963, which studied children's behaviors after watching an adult model act aggressively towards a bobo doll. There were 36 boys and 36 girls between the ages of 37 to 69 months old from Stanford University nursery. The children were split up into 4 different groups that were controlled by half of them that were with the same sex or different sex. Each child was not with the other one due to any possible influences, and there were different scenarios for the two stages in the experiment. His results for the bobo doll experiment concluded that males have more aggressive tendencies than females. I completely agree that violent behaviors come from the influence from our society. The social learning theory indicates that social behavior (any type of behavior that we display socially) is learned primarily by observing and imitating the actions of others. “The social behavior is also influenced, according to this theory, by being rewarded and/or punished for these actions” (Isom, 1998, par.#2). But not only that, I agree that violent behavior comes from the video games we play, the movies and television shows we watch, and the news that comes on the television. I do agree that media violence does play a role to real world violence, aggression, and influence.

In the social learning theory, I agree with Albert Bandura experiment’s, not what the experimenter’s said against his theory, because children’s brains are like sponges and will absorb anything that they see on television and in society; eventually the children will think it is okay to be violent. Children keep the cycle going for the aggression and violence in the real world. For my first claim, I know that school shootings and massacres have increased since the April 20, 1999 Columbine High School massacre. Ever since the Columbine High School massacre, there have been more well-known school shootings around the United States of America. Video games have the most impact on the shooters because they’re more violent video games than age appropriate video games. In most of our video games, it involves speed and shooting people. These games are rated for children that are 17 years old or older. However, parents do not pay attention to that because children will ask for their parents to buy these games for them even if they’re not within age recommendations to get the game. I am not just talking about Call of Duty, Need for Speed, or Grand Theft Auto; there is a video game about the Columbine High School massacre (Columbine High School massacre.) It is you playing as Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold (the shooters) in the game. I do not believe that Albert Bandura’s theory lacks validity in the Columbine school shooting because I think that Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris had some sort of mental issue to decide that they want to kill everyone in their high school. Bandura’s bobo doll experiment was only to prove how social media violence affects children. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris violence at the Columbine high school did not make the students become violent and try to kill everyone else in society. I do believe that video games have a huge part in the aggression in children because it isthey are like the bobo doll experiment in a more modern way. Young children have sponge like brain that will just absorb everything in the video game, and they do not understand that you cannot do that in the real world.
