Not All Young People Are Tech-Savv

The article “Generational myth: Not all young people are tech-savvy” brought reader’s awareness to the myth that not all digital natives are technological sound and the myth between age and technological knowledge. The article is framed in a generic fashion where it looks at all youths, and reference to their technological capabilities or incapability (Siva,2012). Looking at such a large group, there are bound to be exclusions from this absolute statement that not all youths are tech-savvy. Sometimes looking at the flipside of the statement, where all young people are tech-savvy will give us more strength when supporting the myth stated above. In the world we live in today surrounded by what we deem to be technology, everyone being increasingly reliant on the usage of technology to by pass our daily lives, however there has been an argument being brought to our attention regarding the myth that not all youths are tech-savvy. There has been a misconception that youths today being digital natives and ushering in the digital generation causes them to “automatically” be categorized as tech-savvy (Palfrey,Gasser ,2010,2). However, what deems one to be considered tech-savvy? With the fast increasing popularity of technology many would jump to the conclusion that indeed the all youths of today are more incline to technology. The general assumes that the young will surpass the level of innovation and creative ideas of today. Technology has become part and parcel of our daily lives and is being introduced to children at an even earlier age; thus allowing them to pick up the fundamentals of technology at a very young age (Itō, 2010). It is now a common sight to see an adolescence using a touch screen technology instead of the traditional coloring book to learn how to read and write, having an abundance of applications to choose from on all sorts of leaning objectives needed for mental growth. However, does mealy having the technology available lead us to have a better understanding of technology as a whole? Technology and what is it meant to be tech-savvy

First we have to consider what is meant by technology, according to the oxford dictionary, technology is the “application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes”(“technology”). With this definition in mind it converts the mere word technology into a broad spectrum ranging from industrial machinery, household appliances, and our all time favorites the computer and the World Wide Web. Thus looking at the myth not all youths are tech-savvy, how far along the spectrum are we looking into the definition of technology? Secondly we often refer to youths as tech-savvy but it has always been on the back of our minds what the term really means. Tech-savvy is usually linked to the idea that one is capable in the usage of the computer and knows his/her way around them. Much like the definition of technology, being tech-savvy is very much the same consisting of many levels; but at what level do we go from being technological numb to being technological savvy. The line is fairly ambiguous to most, for many youths being tech-savvy might mean that they are able to tweet their daily activities on Twitter, update their profile on Facebook and use Wikipedia for assignments. In the more advanced term it could be linked to having the knowledge of the binary code and having adequate computer programming skills. For someone to be labeled as tech-savvy they should be able to not only have the skills and the knowledge for the operation of the equipment but also the understanding and capability that goes beyond scraping the surface. Looking at the term youth used in this article it has been generalized to be the Americanized youths with the capabilities to go and purchase technology, with the infrastructure that allows for the introduction of these technologies.
