Similarities and Differences Between American and Turkish Universities

In Turkey, many students dream about studying in the U.S. There are several reasons why Turkish student desire this, including the belief that getting into U.S. universities is easy if you can afford it. These students do not realize Turkish and American Universities are neither better nor worse than the other. However, universities in Turkey and the US have both similarities and differences regarding admissions, cost of education, and the education system.

Although there are some similarities, there are many differences in the admission process n both countries. In Turkey, two exams are required from the universities which are very challenging, and the exam results determine the college which student can apply to. In the U.S., students have to take an exam like in Turkey. The exam is called the SAT. Another similarity is the high school GPA which is also a common importance to getting the universities in both countries. In Turkey, after students got both their exam score and GPA, they have to make a priority list of the university they want to attend. As for the acceptance procedures, Turkish students could be accepted to only one college if they meet the required score from the schools. On the contrary, students in the U.S. can apply to as many schools as they want, and also they could get accepted at several colleges. After they get accepted, they could decide which school they want to attend. A final difference in admission standards in both countries are other requirements which are some essays, personal statement, and sometimes interviews in the U.S., but for Turkish universities there is no requirement other than exams and GPA. In addition the cost of education is another feature of Turkish and U.S. universities which have similarities and differences.
