Potential Evening Food Service Study
The purpose of this proposal is to request approval to study the need and demand of evening food service from 4:00pm until 7:00pm, Monday through Thursday at Evergreen Technical College.
On July 1, 2013, the Student Government Association forwarded emails and comments made by students regarding the lack of evening food service on the Evergreen Technical College campus to the Student Government Food Service Committee.
A vocal minority feels that food service needs to be offered at Evergreen Technical College in the evening; the planning, supervision, and workforce that allows Evergreen to provide similar food service during the day is not available; providing food service cannot become a reality unless sufficient consumer demand is measured to be present .
The committee would like to explore the demand for such a service and to determine its feasibility. We are proposing a study that would allow us to survey students, faculty, and instructors to get a comprehensive view of demand. We will advertise though the student newsletter and school websites to help gather a more complete sample. If this proposal is passed, the committee would begin work immediately and submit its final report to the Student Government.
On July 1, 2013, the Student Government Association forwarded emails and comments made by scholars regarding the lack of evening food service on the Evergreen Technical College campus to the Student Government Food Service Committee. Comments made by students suggest some have difficulty learning and staying focused due to lack of food options on campus during evening hours. Student Joe Smith emailed on April 25, 2013 that almost his entire class of 25 students would like food service provided during evening hours. The committee would like to survey students during evening classes to have a more complete understanding of student interest.
Currently, Evergreen Technical College offers food service from 10:00am until 2:00pm, Monday through Friday with no other food options outside these hours. The committee would like to explore the demand for an evening food service option from 4:00pm until 7:00pm, Monday through Thursday. It is estimated that 200-300 students gather in the student lounge area during this time. Casual observations made by faculty members, staff, and students suggest the busiest time would be from 5:00pm to 6:15pm. Biology teacher Fred Flintstone sent a memo on April 1, 2013 that his evening students lacked focus and had a more difficult time during labs compared to those in his daytime course. Mr. Flintstone firmly believes this is due to students attending class before eating dinner. The committee intends to send a survey to all staff requesting feedback on food service and classroom dynamics.
Reasonable per-student costs have been found through some light internet searching of several chain restaurants in our area. Financially, it seems feasible to move forward in studying the possibility of providing food service. For example, Barchetta’s Pizza will deliver Italian beef w/ au jus and French bread, a choice of mostaccioli or spaghetti, and, additionally, potato salad or cole slaw for 150 people at a per person cost of $4.00. A soup and salad offering is also available for $3.00 per person. They advertise that they provide all the disposable warming equipment, serving utensils, dining utensils, plates, etc. Student Government would add a reasonable service charge (to be determined) in order to create a contingency fund in the event of loss. Leftovers, from whichever vendor is eventually chosen, can be donated to local charities, providing multiple public relations opportunities for the college....
