General Purpose:To inform.
Specific Purpose:To inform my audience about the dangers and outcomes of drinking and driving. Central Idea:Today, I will first explain the effects alcohol can have on a person’s body, secondly, the financial consequences of drunk driving and finally, how driving under the influence has impacted our society.

Introduction

A.Attention Getter: May 14, 1988. The worst bus accident in American history occurred on the way home from a church trip. At 11pm, a black Toyota pickup truck driven by an intoxicated Larry Mahoney struck the bus nearly head on driving the wrong direction on the freeway. The crash ruptured the gas tank and within minutes engulfed the entire bus in flames. Of the 66 passengers, 27 died, 34 severely injured. Mahoney was sentenced to 16 years in prison. B.Main Thesis: Making one decision to get behind the wheel after a night of drinking, could affect your life or someone else’s forever. C.Establish Credibility: Having read a book called “Drunk Driving,” written in 2006, along with reading several articles and being convicted of a DUI myself, I have become more adept to understanding the implications of this subject. D.Preview: Today, I will first explain the effects alcohol can have on a person’s body, secondly, the financial consequences of drunk driving and finally, how driving under the influence has impacted our society.
