Intoxicated Driving: Can Technology make it Impossible
Drinking and driving has affected many of my friends and family and myself. A drunk driver hit my sister-in-law 20 years ago. He man hit her while she was walking to work. On impact, she was pinned between two vehicles. The accident changed her life dramatically. She lost both of her legs from the knee down and sustained a brain injury. Until that day, she was a successful model in Miami, Florida. She is now living as normal a life as she can in West Virginia. Can we stop this type of tragedy? Five years ago, my best friend was arrested for drinking and driving. The police pulled her over because her brother, a passenger in the car, was vomiting out the passenger window. He was drunk also. She was pulled over one block from her home. The police told her that had her brother not been vomiting out the window, they would not have pulled her over. My friend was lucky it was her first offense. She lost her license for three months and was on probation for a year. I hope and pray she never drives while drunk again. I am not saying I have never drank and drove but, I now have a new rule, if I have more than one drink I need to call a cab or catch a ride home. Early this year, a drunk driver devastated a friend of mine that I went to school with, life. His mother, father, wife, and one-week-old son where hit by a drunk driver while taking a walk in Seattle. His mother and father passed away from their injuries. His wife and newborn son sustained major injuries. For a while, he thought he would lose them too. Fortunately, they both survived. His wife is still in long-term recovery and making strides in the right direction all the time. She still has trouble walking and talking. His son is doing remarkably well and may not suffer any long-term damage. The man who hit...
